Episode 93: Borrelia Epitope Switching as Camouflage
MCAS is NOT the same as MCAS Syndrome which is far more serious and likely genetically mediated by the KIT gene which interferes with cell growth. MCAS is also likely to be genetically mediated but the genes are different such as the DAO gene and the HNMT gene. MCAS symptoms result when an allergen, pathogen, or chemical activates the mast cells which contain granules of histamine. The granules then release the histamine and you get a myriad of symptoms such as nausea, dizziness, diarrhea, congestion, runny nose, brain fog, poor memory, poor executive functioning and fatigue with general malaise. Clinicians should treat MCAS FIRST before anything else to get the histamine stabilized, and then treat the infections or mycotoxins. It will be far more effective. Episode 92: MCAS (Mass Cell Activation) What is it?
Bacterial cholangitis (inflammation of the bile duct) is often prevalent in patients with mycotoxin illness or tick borne illness as the bacteria and mycotoxins clog the duct. Bile is produced by the liver and the bile duct moves it from the liver where it is produced to the small intestine where it breaks down fatty acids and neutralizes stomach acid. Symptoms of a clogged bile duct can include: fever, chills, right upper quadrant abdominal pain, jaundice, itching on palms and soles, darkening of urine, and pale stools. This can be diagnosed with an ultrasound. Treatment consists of antibiotics, cholenest, and or a procedure called ERC¹qD done by a hepatologist. Lyme disease is caused by the bacteria Borrelia Bugdorferi and Tick Borne Relapsing Fever is caused by Borrelia Myamotoi, Borrelia hermsii, or Borrelia turcata. Episode 89: Lyme disease versus Relapsing Fever
When to stop antibiotics is an individual decision for each patient as it depends on how many infections you have and how long you have had them, the status of your immune system, diet, stress, etc…Generally for patients on antibiotics you treat until there are no symptoms and then three months more and then transition to herbs. If the patient relapses then they go back on antibiotics until symptoms disappear, the three more months and then again transition to herbs. The hope is that the patient will be in remission and remain there. A cytokine storm occurs when the immune system is battling an infection and releases proinflammatory cytokines such as IL-6, IL-8, Il-1, TNF alpha, interferon gamma, IL-12, IL-18. These molecules initiate a host of symptoms that can be damaging to tissues. Episode 87: Cytokine Storm
The difference between continuous versus pulsed antibiotics really depends on two things: 1) how many infections does the patient have 2) how long has the patient been infected. For patients who have been infected for many years and have multiple infections, you need to start by pulsing say twice a week to keep the die off reaction to a dull roar. Otherwise the patient will be very sick. Then gradually work up to continuous antibiotics which is the quickest way to get the infections under control. Episode 86: Continuous versus Pulsed Antibiotics
Treating tick borne illness organisms is an art. As you begin treatment first we work on detox and lymph drainage. Then as flow begins to get activated we start treating the organism that is most prominent which Dr. Marra can assess first and the other organisms get treated at the same time but to a lesser extent. As treatment progresses the original organism pathogen load comes down and now another pathogen pops up front and center and then that one becomes the central focus. This flux in organism prominence is very common and eventually all the pathogen loads will become less and the patient will go into remission hopefully. Intermittent fasting, (eating a mediterranean diet during an 8 hour window) and water fasting for 16 hours is a very old spiritual technique from India, Tibet, South America, etc… It was used to cleanse the spirit.
