Aside from tick-borne illnesses and mycotoxin illness, migraine headaches can also be caused by excess histamine, which we frequently see in patients with MCAS (mast cell activation syndrome). Reducing dietary histamine can be very helpful. You can search for “high histamine foods” and remove them from your diet, but it is especially important to eliminate: - All fermented foods - Aged cheeses - Chocolate - Bone broth These foods are well known to trigger histamine-mediated migraine headaches. Migraines can also result from nutritional deficiencies, particularly magnesium, CoQ10, and B vitamins. Adding these nutrients to your supplement regimen may help reduce migraine frequency and severity if headaches are a persistent issue. Addressing both histamine load and nutrient status is often key to meaningful migraine relief. Episode 165: Migraine Headaches, Histamine, and Nutritional Support
Immunosuppression is very common in tick-borne disease (TBD) as well as viral and fungal infections, and it can affect multiple arms of the immune system. This suppression often involves both T cells and B cells. T cells, which are made in the thymus gland, include natural killer (NK) cells—immune cells that move throughout the body acting like scavengers, identifying and destroying anything foreign. B cells, which are made in the bone marrow, produce antibodies that help neutralize antigens, allergens, and pathogens. When these systems are suppressed, the body loses its ability to effectively control infection and inflammation. Supporting immune recovery is therefore a critical part of treatment. Two helpful strategies include: - Subcutaneous (Sub Q) administration of peptides, which can help modulate and strengthen immune function - Hydrotherapy, such as alternating hot–cold–hot–cold showers, which stimulates circulation and immune responsiveness Restoring immune balance allows the body to better respond to infection and supports long-term healing. Epigenetics refers to the way the environment influences gene expression—in other words, how genes are turned on or off without changing the underlying DNA sequence. Infections such as tick-borne disease (TBD) and mycotoxin illness are largely stealth pathogens. These organisms can pierce the cell membrane, travel toward the nucleus, and take up residence in ways that alter genetic expression. They can switch genes on or off, sometimes in ways that are adaptive, and other times in ways that are harmful. For example, we know that women with TBD have a higher incidence of breast cancer, a finding supported by Neil Spector’s work at Duke University. This highlights the reality that genetic sequencing alone is not sufficient to fully understand what is happening in complex chronic illness. To truly understand patient illness patterns and risk, we must also understand the epigenetic influences on the genome—how infections, toxins, and environmental stressors shape gene expression over time. Esophagitis is often seen in patients with Lyme disease and/or Bartonella. It can be quite painful and very disruptive to eating and normal upper GI function. For mild to moderate symptoms, supportive options include: - DGL (deglycyrrhizinated licorice) - Aloe juice that is thick and gelatinous to soothe and coat the esophageal mucosa Additional strategies that can be very helpful include: - Using a vagus nerve stimulator (vagus.net) - BPC-157 peptides, oral and/or injectable - Red light laser therapy applied to the area for 20–30 minutes These approaches help calm inflammation, support tissue healing, and allow food to pass into the stomach more comfortably and without pain. Neuroinflammation occurs when organisms or mycotoxins cross the blood–brain barrier and begin to affect glial cells and astrocytes. When this happens, patients often describe the sensation as the brain feeling swollen, pressurized, or “like it’s in a vice.” There are several substances that can help lower neuroinflammation and support brain healing, including: Oxytocin Low-Dose Naltrexone (LDN) Alpha-Lipoic Acid (ALA) Oxytocin and LDN must be obtained through a compounding pharmacy, while alpha-lipoic acid is a nutraceutical that can be used as part of a supportive protocol. Episode 160: Neuroinflammation and Supporting the Brain
There is a fine line between using oral antibiotics versus intravenous (IV) antibiotics, and IV therapy does come with additional risks. In general, advanced NeuroLyme often requires IV antibiotics, and autoimmune encephalopathy may also require IVIG (intravenous immunoglobulins). In some cases, these therapies can be administered simultaneously in patients who have a PICC line or a Port placed in the chest. One of the primary risks with long-term IV access is the development of a blood clot within the line, which would require the line to be removed. The use of Heparin helps reduce this risk by preventing clot formation and maintaining line patency. Careful monitoring and thoughtful decision-making are essential when determining the appropriate route of therapy in complex chronic illness. Episode 159: Oral vs. IV Antibiotics in Complex Tick-Borne Illness
Hypercoagulation secondary to infection is commonly seen in tick-borne disease (TBD) and Covid, and we also see it frequently in mycotoxin illness. In this state, the blood becomes thicker, and there is damage to the vascular endothelium—the inner lining of the blood vessels. When the endothelium is injured, normal blood flow is impaired, which limits the delivery of oxygen and essential nutrients to tissues. As a result, tissues become oxygen-starved (hypoxic) and are no longer able to perform normal metabolic and repair functions. This contributes to fatigue, pain, inflammation, and delayed healing seen in chronic illness. Addressing both coagulation abnormalities and endothelial health is essential for restoring circulation and supporting recovery. Oxytocin is a neurohormone produced by the posterior pituitary gland and plays a critical role in mammalian bonding—both to a social group and between mother and child. Interestingly, research shows that monogamous mammals, such as the vole, have higher levels of oxytocin, highlighting its importance in attachment, trust, and social connection. Oxytocin can be obtained through Infuserve in St. Petersburg, Florida. A common starting approach is 10 IU as a sublingual troche, adjusted as appropriate under medical guidance. Proper dental hygiene is essential for reducing inflammatory burden in the body, especially when you have tick-borne illness (TBD). Dental issues such as cavitations, root canals, cracked teeth, and periodontal disease can become sites where opportunistic TBD organisms establish themselves. These organisms favor protected biofilm environments, allowing them to persist and drive ongoing inflammation that degrades surrounding tissues. Addressing oral health can remove a significant source of chronic immune activation and support overall healing. For patients with complex chronic illness, it’s worth considering care with a biological dentist, who is trained to evaluate and manage dental issues with a whole-body, inflammation-aware approach.
